Upon completing his military service, Sergei moved to Tambov, Russia to enter a Military Engineering School. He graduated with honors and served as an officer with the 693rd Brigade in Yekaterinburg, Russia. He was born in 1905 in Nizhneudinsk, Irkutsk Governorate, Russian Empire (present-day Udinsky District, Krasnoyarsk Krai) to a working-class family. In 1921, he joined the Red Army serving in the 12th Rifle Corps.

While fighting in Mozyr, Belarus he was taken prisoner by Polish forces and held in captivity for almost four years. While he was a prisoner of war Sergei Sukharev attended the Belarusian gymnasium in Borisov. While in prison, he became very interested in Marxism-Leninism.
